Cozaar (Losartan Potassium) Medication Information:
What is Cozaar?
It is a prescription medication that is used to treat the symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension), reduce the risk of stroke in persons with heart disease, and relieve diabetic nerve pain (neuropathy). Cozaar can be taken alone or in combination with other medications.
It belongs to the Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonist class of medicines (ARBs).
Cozaar is not known to be safe or effective in children under the age of six.
Cozaar Uses:

Dosage and Directions:
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily with or without food. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
The usual starting dose of Cozaar is 50mg once daily.
The dosage can be increased to a maximum dose of 100mg once daily as needed to control blood pressure.
A starting dose of 25mg is recommended for patients with possible intravascular depletion (e.g., on diuretic therapy).
Patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH):
The usual starting dose of Cozaar is 50mg once a day. Depending on blood pressure response, hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg, once daily should be added, and/or the dose of Cozaar should be increased to 100mg once daily, followed by an increase in hydrochlorothiazide to 25mg once daily.
Diabetic Patients with Type 2 Nephropathy:
The recommended starting dose is 50mg once per day. Based on blood pressure response, the dose should be increased to 100mg once daily.
In Patients with Hepatic Impairment:
The suggested beginning dose of Cozaar for patients with mild to severe hepatic impairment is 25mg once a day.
For 200 mL of a 2.5mg/mL Suspension:
If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
Cozaar Side Effects:
As your body responds to the medicine, you may experience dizziness or light-headedness. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if any of these side effects persist or worsen.
If you experience any of the following unlikely but dangerous adverse effects: fainting, indications of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), call your doctor straight once.
Losartan may be used to prevent kidney issues or to treat those who already have them, but it can potentially cause or worsen serious renal problems in certain people. While you're on losartan, your doctor will monitor your kidney function. If you see any signs of kidney trouble, such as a change in the amount of urine you produce, call your doctor straight once.
Cozaar Precautions:
If you are allergic to losartan or have any other allergies, notify your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Inactive chemicals may be included in this product, causing allergic reactions or other issues.
Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any previous medical conditions you've had, especially if you've had a liver illness, dehydration, or a high potassium level in your blood.
This medicine has the potential to raise your potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking potassium supplements or salt replacements that include potassium.
Storage:
- Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions to 15-30°C (59-86°F) are tolerated.
- Keep the container closed tightly. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Keep out of children's reach.
Cozaar Drug Interactions:
Drug interactions can cause your older medicines to perform differently or put you at risk for dangerous adverse effects. This list does not include all potential medication interactions.
Aliskiren, lithium, and medications that raise potassium levels in the blood (such as ACE inhibitors like benazepril/lisinopril, and birth control pills containing drospirenone) are all possible interactions with this medication.
Some items contain substances that can elevate blood pressure or exacerbate heart failure. Tell the pharmacist about the products you're using and ask how to use them safely (especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen)
